Fans who have been missing Ryan Eggold on The Blacklist can rejoice! Less than a year after leaving the drama (and after his own spinoff got cancelled), NBC has greenlit its first new series for the 2018-2019 broadcast season, the medical drama New Amsterdam, and in doing so, the network assured Eggold’s return to televisionin a leading role. The Blacklist fan favorite’s new drama will find him playing a character with little in common to Tom Keen.
Ryan Eggold will star as Dr. Max Goodwin in NBC’s New Amsterdam, which will follow the bright and charismatic doctor as he comes aboard as the public hospital’s newly minted medical director. Now at the helm, Dr. Goodwin must confront all the problematic ins and outs, including financial and staffing issues, all while attempting to bring a modern approach to the aging New York hospital, which is the only one of its kind that is capable of helping everyone from ebola victims to the POTUS himself. That’s quite a lot of pressure.
According to Variety, New Amsterdam‘s central hospital is the only one capable of treating such an array of patients, and the series sounds like an exciting spin on the genre. New Amsterdam, which was set up at NBC last September with a put pilot commitment, will be written by David Schulner, who is also an executive producer along with Peter Horton. Kate Dennis is directing and executive producing the pilot, with Dr. Eric Manheimer on board to produce the series. Along with Ryan Eggold, the cast also includes Freema Agyeman, Tyler Labine, Janet Montgomery, Jocko Sims and Anupam Kher.

Ryan Eggold left The Blacklist when his character, Tom Keen, was killed off in Season 5’s fall finale. Before being killed off, Eggold led The Blacklist‘s short-lived spinoff series The Blacklist: Redemption, which answered a lot of questions surrounding the origin story of the character. When the series was not renewed, he returned to The Blacklist. The show’s investment in Tom Keen made his being killed off all the more shocking, and, in the end, puzzling. In total, Eggold played the role for four years and five seasons between the two series. No matter the storyline, Ryan Eggold showed an innate ability to make viewers desire Tom Keen’s redemption, even when the chances for it seemed mighty dim, and his talent has not been lost on NBC.
A premiere date for New Amsterdam has not been announced yet, though it could arrive sometime this fall on NBC.
